Filling a gameboard with scenography is allways very gratefull, and one of the things that best fills a gameboard are not buildings, but the flora of the terrain.

Not long ago I bought a 4 tree pack (a bit expensive) so I could add some detail in the games.
The point is that after a game of Lord of the Rings, I realized that the trees were shit, the base was small and withput weight, so they kept falling all the game.

Oh gods! I curse you for letting me buy trees that fall.

Oh well, I had to find a solution, the normal way would have been throwing the trees and buy new ones, but I'm not a person that throws things away, actually I'm the contrary.

Another solution could have been drilling the base and adding some weight to the trees, but after taking a closer look to the tree I saw that thoose were really bad made, so destroying their little physical integrity was not going to help.

The only way was to make a system that hold the base so the trees won't fall, and if it could also allow to take the tree away in order to measure distants better.

Said and donde, a DM board 3mm thick I kept, didn't I told you I don't throw away anaything?, a skecht of a couple of islands and the positions of the trees.

20 minutes later I had this.
Two pieces with no shape in particular with two holes each to put the trees.

Seems like I was on the right direction, but something was missing, I didn't knew what but something was not quite right.

I decided to add a green layer of eva foam, and the thing turn better, and seeing I liked it, I added a second layer creating level curves, and... ooooh how nice and easy.

One hour and half of work, and the trees are ready for my next games of The Lord of the Rings, the good thing is that the trees-islands, can be put closer or away to create a feeling of more or less leafy, and that you can take the trees so you can measure distances knowing where you have to put them back.

trying a new material can be either good or bad, after some experiments with leather I decided to do something a bit more complex, since it's the only way of leveling up.

By following a tutorial found on internet, and using differents patterns from many webs I have done a helmet, a bit fantasy helmet to say, more like a test than a final pattern, I'll talk about the process.

Starting with the basic.
Well, the first thing you need is an idea of what you want to do, in my trial, and after a lot searching I fancy a hibrid helmet with many parts more or less like this one.

This example is from DarkKnightArmory and it's the one I liked most for doing my prototipe.

Oh yeah!, that is a skecht that you'll never forget, I'm sure that it's the most evillish thing you have ever seen, it's so evil that I bet you have forgoten how to do differential equations.

Lucky the final result has NOTHING to do with the skecht.

We now proceed with the second step, measuring the head in 3 directions, from the top of the nose to the back, from ear to ear, and all the radius from the forehead.

With this 3 measures and some cardboard we make the prototipe of the helmet frame.

Consejo nº1

Advice nº1
Do every piece longer than the measure of the head, I recall that for this example I did it 1,5cm longer.

Another important thing is that the head is not round, it's oval, so the axis are not in the center. I put the side axis just on top of the ears, that means it's a bit off the center of the piece.

Let's go with the most complex part of the helmet, the triangles that goes inside the helmet and give it the final shape.

After some tests with patterns from internet I desist and decided to make my own pattern (now I'll keep it for future generations).

Consejo nº2

Advice nº2
If you are going to draw a curve, allways use an especial rule, I use a flexible curve drawer wich works great.

This interior piece, is NOT an equilateral triangle, as I said before the head is oval, not round.

After finishing the pattern, and with a margin of error quite big, I started to prepare the prototipe. Since the cardboard does not bend as the leather I added a margin of error od 2 cm.

Seeing that if fits perfectly I pass to the next step, cutting the leather.

Consejo nº3

Advice nº3
Allways work step by step, don't try to rush, it's better to spend one 1 longer if by doing that you get everything to fit.

After many test, measuring and remeasuring, I cutted the pieces, the 2 strips missing for the frame, and the 4 interior pieces that will make the helmet. After boiled them less than an minute I prepared them for shapping.

With the structure already done, and seeing that everything fit without problems I decided to rivet things, and ERROR!, in this step I didn't saw it, but later on I had to pull out a couple of rivets... what did I told you early?, DON'T RUSH.

Maximun stress moment, the pieces fit withput problem, and with some tongs I begin to put them in their places.

I don't have pictures of the process of riveting the pieces, but I asure you that this step was done with extra care in order to fit all the pieces withput problems.

And as I usually do in this cases, when something ends well, and I'm happy with the final result I usually left it be until next day so I don't run out of luck.

Reparando minis / repairing minis (tutorial)

How sad is to see a broken mini, that wizard with his staff broken in two, you know hw'll never be able to throw spells as he used to, and if that wizard is Gandalf then the sadness is infinite.

While in the Castilla y Dragón 3º edition, I bought the "mines of Moria" pack for a VERY cheap price, reason o motive, the rip off of two of it's minis, Gandalf with the staff and the sword broken, and Aragorn without an arm.

True is, it's really sad to look at them. Anyway, since this humle servant is handy, and has infinite spare time, nothing better than an afternoon for repairing minis.

Empezamos de momento con el fácil, Gandalf.
Let's start with the easy one, Gandalf.

You'll need a cutter, a pair of pins, a lighter, two component resin, thin grain sandpaper and some small pliers.

First sand down the broke point, in order to left it as flat as possible.

With the lighter heat on the tip of the pin until it goes red. As allways, in this caes take care not to burn yourself , or worst burn down the house.

With the pin in red, stick it into the broken point, trying to continue the line, in this case, of the staff.

We mix the resin, and make a very thin line, the thiner the better.

we roll it carefull over the pin, as the photo shows.

Luckly, Gandalf the grey's staff is woody shaped, so we don't need to add much detail, with a push and a pull over there and there is enough.

The sword is a little bit more complex, but not much. We repeat the pin process, heat, stick, and roll.

The resin I use, gets hard in about an hour, so I recommend to do this step when it's getting hard.

With the resin getting hard, we use the pliers smashing bit by bit in the direction of the sword, until you get into the pin.
This has two reasons, create a resistant mass and preparing the hollow of the sword.

Now with the pliers again, we keep smashing in the way of the blade, in order to make the interior hollow of the sword, but not too much. Also we give the sword the final aspect.

We wait until the resin is hard, and with the sandpaper we beging giveing the final shape, the more time we spend in this part the better it will look.

Finally some paint, and ready, Gandalf is ready for killing orcs, at least until a Balrog appears.

Only thing that matters is the product, not the craftsman

The Ringmaille workshop has come to an end, and we do so really satisfied, lots of people interested, we made lots and great friendships (second allways better), I sold everything I could and more, even I got a new surprise order of which I'll be talking step by step in the future.

Also I met in person a follower of the blog, which allways encourage to keep doing nerdy things.

Last, not for being less importan, but in order to save it for the last, a great gratitude to "Ancient Forge" who made an effort to show us his recreations weapons, a jewel for the view and for thoose who know about swords, a jewel to grasp. If you had one of his swords in your hands, you know what I'm talking about, if not, you are taking much time in not going here.

Thanks a lot to everyone, specially the organization of "Castilla y Dragón", because without them the event could not being possible.
Until next year!

Tablero modular / modular board. 2/3

We go again with the modular board, lets end the side with the tiles and I'll explain to you why I'm wasting time with this.
True is that glueing the 576 tiles has been quite an ungrateful job, sometimes I wonder why I keep wasting time on this stuff, but when you see the result you say, "well maybe I have'nt lost the time enterally"

An observation, since I'm an architect, I've used a silly tecnique but not everybody knows it.
When you build a brick house, the diferents brick packages are mix together, because each package has the bricks of the same tone, and if you build with the same package all the time you end up with a wall with continuos zones in the same tone, this is really bad looking.

In this case, the eva foam has a side of a slighty clear tone (as you can see in the picture), in order to get a tile fealing, I just simply mixed the tiles in a cup and picked them randomly, without paying attention to wich side I'm glueing them. That's why it may seem that I'm using two colours, but actually It has been done with the same layer of eva foam.

And why I've been doing all this work?, so I can have a relief tile on the board and be able to build a 3D dungeon.
It's been years since I wanted a modular 3D dungeon, and after looking a lot around, I have found only two options.

1-cardboard dungeons
Best example of this is "worldworksgames" for me, the best you can find on the market (I have some stuff and those are great).

2- Plastic dungeons.
As for example "dungeonmolds3d" also of a very high quality.

But I have a great problem with both solutions, the amount of space they occupy (and I'll talk about this deeper in the future).

If it's cardboard, not only you have a great deal of big pieces, but you also need to have extra care to not spoil the pieces.

If it's resin, it's much expensive, if requires even more space, you have to paint it, and the size of the walls is as thick as a tile, It's true that it looks great, but it also requires more board space.

VS

My solution, or better said my good friend Emilio's solution, using flat wood pieces.

I like the system a lot, it's perfectly modular with pieces of 2, 3, 4, and 5 tiles long, it does not consume tiles because of the thickness, it fits without trouble into the board, it's easy storageable, and since it's wood it's very hard to break.
so far the problems are, the time for building them, wich is a lot, and that I'll have to paint the walls or print some textures.

By the way, the walls are 2cm high, since one thing I have tried, is that you can't have a dungeon with the walls as high as the minis, yes, it looks great but it also complicates picking the mini for moving it.

For the next post about the board, I'll talking about how I'm resolving the doors problem, but for the moment a prototipe of a door.

Tablero modular / modular board. 1/3

Nothing better than getting into doing new stuff, without finishing the other... oh well, it's just my way of being.

Que necesitamos, o mejor dicho, que estoy usando:
What do we need, or better said, what I'm using:

- "md" board, for those who don't know what is it, it's a fibreboard of medium density.
Easy to find and cheap.
I'm using a 3 mm thick board, Why?, because it's stable enough already, and any other thicker board would be to heavy to carry.

- eva foam, chosen among many materials that I keep at home, basically because I had a roll and wanted to use it, and because I want to test some things.

- scroll saw (if possible), cutter blade, saws, with glue, ruler, etc, etc.

Paso 1: Cortando / Cutting

Cut the board at proper size, I choose a 60 x 120 cm board, and cutted through the middle to get 2 pieces of 60 x 60 cm. Why two 60 x 60 cm boards?, well, first because I'm fed up doing small things, and I wanted to finally make a big surface, the second reason it's because it's the size for warhammer boards, and it may be used for both things.

Remember to mark the lines properly and measure, and measure again, since once you cut... there is no comming back. The picture sucks but you get the idea.

Paso 2: Lineado / lining up

Once you had cut it, it's time for marking the lines of the squares or the tiles.
I'm using a 2,5 cm module (almost an inch), the advantage is that in a 60 cm long board I get 24 squares, more than enoguh for playing.

Primero en un sentido...
First in one side...

Y luego en el otro.
And then in the other.

Paso 3: Añadir las baldosas. / adding tiles.
As I said I'm using 2 mm thick eva foam, medium grey colour for more info.

For what I'd seen in others blogs and tutorials, it's not a comon material for scenography, but well, I had it inside my closet and decided not to go out to buy new stuff.
The advantage is that it's really easy to cut it out, it's weitgh is very low, wich make it very usefull for carrying, but on the other side, if you are not carefull a string preasure with the nail can stay for hours, but we'll talk about this on the next post.

Since we have a marked tiles of 2,5 cm, it's necessary to make smaller tiles, in order to get a small sparation between them. I'm cutting 2,3 cm tiles, so I can get a distance of 0,2 mm between each tile.

This is a very tedious part, you have to cut and glue 576 tiles, so it's going to take long. I'm using white glue and seems to be glueing without problems, a friend told me to use a hot glue gun, but I think there is no need for that.
For the next post, I'll be having the board with all the tiles, and we 'll move to the next step.

Contemplad! el Monktauro / Behold! the Monktauren!

Soon my last cut-out mini.
There is much work to be done yet, but is going quiet well.

Let's check what we have done so far.

We have created a template for using it until the end of times.
We have cutted the leather piece thanks to the template.
We have soaked the leather in hot water.
We have putted the leather on a mold, an let it dry.
Now we have the piece in it's correct shape an size.

 ¿Que nos falta?/What is missing?

-Sistema de agarre/ Grip system
-Remaches/ Rivets
-Toque final/ Final touch

Let's go with the first part, the grip system.

The real greave, was a armor piece that covered all the leg, front and back, this is more likely a shinguard. If I had more leather for the back part... maybe some day.

What they did have, was a strap system, probably with the use of some buckle.

Trying to get it to be, as realistic as possible, but keeping in mind to make it confortable, and taking advantage of the modern metallurgy, I decided to use 3 strips with buckles, about 2 cm width, that meas that the strips have to be slighty smaller, about 1,5 cm.

In the picture you can se the 6 buckles with the strips ready.

I'm barely telling technical data, lets talk about a couple of things. First, finding the 6 same buckles was impossible, so I bought 2 of a kind, so each grave will have a full set of 3 different buckles, located from above to bottom, from bigger to smallest.

The grip system for the strips is made with rivets, I was going to sew it, but I decided to save time.

This drawing is made so you can get an idea for doing the buckle pieces.

Basically we take a leather strip, about 7 cm long, and divided in 3 equal parts.
On one side we leave 2 holes for graping it to the grave (better 2 than 1).
On the other to parts, me make two SIMETRICAL holes, for the rivet that is going to hold the buckler, and a little hole for the pin of the buckler.

For the remaining strips, just make some long strips, about 15 cm should be enough, once again, 2 holes on one side, and the other ended pointed, so it can fit better into the buckler.

For the gripping holes, a separation of 1 cm, should be enough, but make a lot of them just in case.

The gripping strips should have different lenghts, the ankle one could be a 8 cm long, for the calf about 12-14, and the knee about 18-20. Once again, depending of your leg size you'll have to change this dimensions, this is the reason why there are not strips images on the templates.

I have to say that in this picture, the strips are OVER sizes, so it can fit to allmost everybody,

I fear we are going to have some problems with some people.
The traditional rivet way, should be a brass, copper, or iron pieces, easily molded with a small hammer. I think there are even nut rivets, but I've never used them.

anyway, I don't feel like hammering, especially because I did it once with my pauldrons, and it requieres some effort to make it right, and it takes quite some time.

This is why, and I don't want to encourage anybody to do it the same way as I did, that I used strecht rivets (I think they are called that way).
I'm certain that this is not the best way of doing this, and of course it has no historical rigour, but the time you are going to save, it's totally worth it.

Just use a simple puncher, a rivet gun, and you'll have it done in no time.

Once again, if you want historial rigour, don't use this rivets, I just want you to save some time.

El toque final /The final touch

The magic touch that will make the greaves to look high quality, and also will add an extra protection against water.

Betún de judea (bitumen) is a dye used on restoration for adding an old look it's used on wood, metal, ceramic, leather, I even used it on some miniature.

It's an asphalt so take care not to inhalate the vapours, open your windows, and apply the bitumen at your will.

depending on the age level you want to have, you can use it directly, or thin it with turpentine, your way.

You can barely see it since it's was midnight, but I was already using the bitumen, can you notice the difference of colour?, I thin not much with turpentine, but at my own, can't tell the exact amount.

The cool thing, is that you also add a light layer that will avoid it to get wet (it still can get wet, but a little less).

The right way of doing this, should have to used the bitumen BEFORE adding the stripes, but I was convinced in that time, to leave the greaves without bitumen, It was not until I had everything finished that I wanted to use the dye, and I must say that they ended looking pretty cool.

And that's all, a really easy job, not much effort requiredm and a rather good result, I loved working with leather for the first time, and I'm sure it won't be the last.

*(If you have pink scissors, and imitation jewery for girls on your work bench you work MUCH better XD)
