He visto esto y me he quedado de piedra, no sé si decir que viva la industrialización o pensar en la de tiempo que he perdido haciendo todo a mano.

I've seen this and got stunned, I don't know if I should say, hail the industrialization or think in all the time I wasted doing everything by hand.

y de paso esta pedazo de máquina, que parece (no se vé del todo) que hace cota de malla a placer.

And also this hell of machine, that it seems (it's not very clear) to make chain mail at pleasure.

Hombreras parte 2; Pauldrons part 2

 Amenacé a los dioses con volver a la carga y yo no amenazo en vano.

Tras un vistazo rápido se aprecia que estoy muuuy lejos de terminar, pero no vamos a desanimarnos por eso.

I threatened the gods I'll be back again, and I don't threaten in vain.


After a quickly look, I see that I'm sooo far from finish, but we aren't going to become discouraged for that.

Como ya había intuido, no podía continuar sin un yunque de hundir, porque la chapa no estiraba ni cogía la forma adecuada. Tras un rato de preparar mi yunque nuevo, ya estaba listo para continuar.

(ningún árbol ha sufrido en la realización de este yunque, al menos no por mi mano).

As I feel, I could not continue without a sinkinf anvil, because the steel didn't stretch neither get the correct shape. After a while preparing my new anvil, I was ready to continue.

(no tree has suffered in the making of this anvil, at least not by my hand).

Pum, pum, pum, y muchos más pums, después, la chapa empezaba a adquirir forma, (gracias yunque!).

Pum, pum, pum, and many pums after, the metal started to get shape (thank you anvil).

Y tras un largo martilleo, ya tenía las dos hombreras relativamente preparadas.

Se nota que la simetría no es lo mio, pero ya solucionaremos eso más adelante.

And after a long hammering, I had two pauldrons, relatively readys.

Is noticed that simetry is not my strong, but we'll get on that later on.

Un rato más para dar la forma y mejorar la simetría y el resultado es este.

After a while giving shape and simetry this was the result.

Puede parecer que son bastante simétricas, pero al comparar los arcos me he dado cuenta que una está casi 1cm más larga que la otra. La he conseguido estirar un poco más pero finalmente me he dado por vencido y he decidido pasar a otra cosa.

It may seem that they are quite identicals, but when comparing the arcs I realized that on was 1 cm longer than the other. I manage to stretch it a little more but I finnally had to give up, and go on.

Una pequeña observación, en realidad las hombreras tienen que estirar en toda la superficie de la mesa, desgraciadamente, he debido de coger una chapa demasiado fina (error de principiante) y no he conseguido que estire mucho más.

Como es la primera vez que lo intento tampoco voy a matarme, estas hombreras son de prueba y no me importa demasiado el resultado final.

A little observation, actually the pauldrons have to stretch all the way to the table surface, unfortunatelly, I seem to have choosen a very slim steel (begginer error) and have not manage to stretch it much more.

Since this is the first time I try this, there is no problem, this is a testting, and I don't mind much the final result.

 Y ya tenemos preparadas las hombreras para la siguiente parte, aplanado, lijado, remaches y cintas. Pero eso es otra historia que será contada en otra ocasión

And we have the pauldrons ready for the next part, leveling, rubbing down, reveting and belting. But that's another history that will be told in another time.

Hombreras parte 1; Pauldrons part 1

Así que, sí el ha podido, ¿por que no voy a poder yo también?.
Vale, no tengo herramientas buenas, vale no tengo ni idea de trabajar chapa, vale no tengo un taller donde dar golpes sin molestar a los vecinos, pero no voy a desanimarme por ello.

Lo primero es lo primero, en búsqueda del patrón para las hombreras.
Y no hace falta buscar mucho, en armourarchive tienes todo lo necesario para hacer un ejército digno de Mordor.

el patrón que me ha parecido más sencillo es este.

First things first, in search of the template of the pauldrons.
And you don't have to look long, in armourarchive you got everything you need to make an army worth of Mordo.


The easiest template I found is this one.

Aunque tiene el fallo de que no te dice exactamente como se trabaja, pero por suerte tiene este otro donde sí que te lo dice.


But it doen't tells you exactlly how to give it shape, but luckily you got this one.

Combinando ambos, ¡no habrá chapa que se pueda resistir!.

La verdad es que siendo la 1º vez que me pongo a hacer esto, he empezado por no coger una pieza demasiado grande, ni hacer una armadura demasiado complicada.

Combining both, there won't be any metal to resist my power!


Acctually, being the first time I try to make this, I started with a piece not very large, and not very difficult.

Dibujado el patrón sobre la chapa ya podemos irnos haciendo una idea de como va a quedar.
Es importante dibujar el patrón una y otra vez hasta estar convencidos que lo estamos haciendo bien.

By drawing the template over the metal, we can make an idea of the final result.
It's important to draw the template over and over, until we are convinced that we are doing it all right.

Hay que decir que he dibujado una pieza bastante pequeña, o al menos eso me parecía en su momento.
Todo por no gastar demasiado en una chapa de acero, no fuera a quedarme un asco y tuviera que tirarlo.

I have to say, that I draw a rather small piece, or at least It seems like that on the time.
All beacuse I didn't want to spend too much on the metal, and have to throw it away, in case of ruining it.

Sin embargo un montón de golpes después la chapa iba cogiendo forma.
(Es genial cuando subes tu 1º nivel en herrería).

Pero también es cuando te das cuenta de que con nivel 1 no vas a ninguna parte...
Algo fallaba, no conseguía dar la forma adecuada a la chapa por más que lo intentaba.

But, after a lot of hammering the metal was getting shape.
(It's great when you get you increase a level in blacksmith skill)


But it's also, the time when you realize that with 1 level, you are going nowhere.

Y dejé las hombreras a medio hacer, pero levanté el puño y amenacé a los dioses "volveré".

so I left the pauldrons half done, but I raised my fist to the heavens and threatened the gods "I'll return".

Proyecto, cota de malla / Project, chainmail; PART 4

He estado un poco liado, pero aún así me ha dado tiempo para terminar los hombros.

Haciendo dos piezas por separado, se trabaja mejor, que tener 2 kilos de metal en la mano no es lo más cómodo del mundo.

I've been a little busy, but I still got time to finish the shoulders.

Doing two separate pieces, you work better, having 2 Kg in your hand it's not the best way to work.

Dos detalles;

la espalda es ligeramente más alargada que el pecho, esto, ya expliqué que era para evitar que la cota nos ahogue cuando nos sentamos. Basta con alargar un poco para notar la diferencia.

Two details:

The back is a bit longer than the chest, I had already explain this, this is to avoid the chain mail to suffocate us when we sit down. It's noly needed a bit, just to notice the difference.

El otro detalle, es una anilla de cobre.

Al terminar la cota, se puede retirar, o dejar.

Yo suelo dejarlas, casi no se aprecian, no estropean la cota, y sirven para saber que lado es la espalda.

The other detail, is a copper ring.

When the chainmail is finished, you may leave it or take it.

I usually leave them, since they are barely seen, they don't spoil the chainmail, and they let us know wich side is the back of the chainmail.

Y bueno, esto ya está, 1/3 de la cota terminada. ahora a disfrutar de un merecido descanso.
